About me how I can help what I do why I do it

Hi, I'm Kathy

I support struggling students.

I’m passionate that all children can learn, that they should be given the tools that they need and an environment that will nurture their development.

It’s my goal to help you achieve success.

Kathy Gelbman support for struggling students

I am a parent, a special educator and a resource for you!

I have sat on both sides of the desk. I’ve been the teacher in parent conferences, and the parent advocating for their child’s needs. In both cases, I’ve nurtured kind, supportive, productive discussions that have have helped parents, teachers, school personnel and outside support providers to work as a team and achieve rewarding outcomes for students.

Parents want their children to have the tools that they need to succeed, and teachers want to provide everything that they can for each student. The only way for students to get what they need is for parents, teachers, and support professionals to understand the child and to work together as a team. Maybe you don’t know who your team is yet, but together we can fix that!

My background

I have a wide variety of experience working with students and families of varied needs including learning, behavioral and mental health related needs.

I have a Master’s degree in Childhood Special Education from Adelphi University and I am mom to an incredible 21 year old daughter who has OCD.

I have previously worked in classrooms from grades 3-9 in both the general and special education settings.  I have taught self-contained classes, inclusive classes and general education classes. I have worked with students of all ages who struggle with learning, behavioral, mental health and growing up issues.

How my experience can help you:

As a teacher, I saw that when students struggle, parents often look to the school for guidance. As a parent, I realize that the school is not always in a position to provide the guidance that you so desperately seek. This is particularly true when the issue is not purely educational.

As parents, we know that whatever is troubling our students affects everything in their world: their grades, their extra-curricular activities, their relationships and their daily lives.

My goal is to help you open lines of communication, gain true understanding of what the student needs, and bridge the gap between home and school.
